What’s New in the GR86 2025?
How much is the Toyota GR86’s price?
As of now, the Toyota GR86 costs 1,32,940 SAR.
How many variants are there in the Toyota GR86?
There is only one variant of the Toyota GR86 on sale as of now. And that is the one with the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine making 228PS and about 250 Nm of max torque.
What features does the Toyota GR86 get?
Most of the GR86’s features are enabled by default. Unlike other Toyotas, the GR86 is a collaboration with Subaru, resulting in the implementation of Subaru's EyeSight system instead of Toyota's own.
While safety is paramount, EyeSight's over reactiveness sometimes felt more hazardous than helpful. For instance, the radar cruise control emits a beep every time it detects a vehicle in front, which, fortunately, can be disabled by delving into the vehicle settings.
However, the aggressive automatic braking and collision warnings were particularly troubling. In regular traffic situations, like when releasing the brake to move forward as the traffic light turns green, there were a lot of collision warnings about rear-ending the car ahead as we both started to move.
Moreover, there were instances where the system would abruptly apply the brakes while creeping along in traffic, creating a genuine risk of being rear-ended due to the unexpected stop.
How spacious is it?
The Toyota GR86 offers generous space, making it comfortable for even larger passengers during road trips. The two rear seats, although compact, are ideal for storing bags, and young children can sit there comfortably as long as legroom isn't a priority—especially when the front seat is adjusted for a taller driver.
Having spent time with the Toyota GR86, we can confirm that even mid-sized teenagers can fit in the back seats. While the +2 rear seats provide adequate headroom, legroom remains a challenge. One passenger can fit in the back if the front passenger seat is pushed forward, sacrificing some of their legroom. This setup is less practical behind most drivers, making the effective seating arrangement more like 2+1.
What engine and transmission options are available?
The GR86’s most significant overhaul lies in its engine. It retains the boxer configuration but now utilizes an enlarged version of the previous GT86’s 2.0-liter engine, expanded to 2.4 liters. Remarkably, despite the increase in displacement, the engine weight remains unchanged due to innovations such as thinner cylinder liners, resin rocker covers, and a re-engineered water jacket.
The power boost is substantial, with an increase of 35bhp, bringing the total to 231bhp. Enhancements like a new fuel injection system and revamped air intake and manifold contribute to a crisper throttle response. Additionally, peak torque is now achieved at 3700 rpm, a significant drop from the GT86’s 6700rpm, resulting in a more robust and flexible power delivery. Cooling efficiency has also been upgraded.
The six-speed manual transmission is largely carried over but features refinements for a better feel, including a shorter throw and improved synchronizer and bearings. There is an optional torque converter automatic, but given the car’s focus on driver engagement, the manual transmission is the preferred choice for enthusiasts.
What’s the mileage of the Toyota GR86?
The Toyota GR86 gave us a mileage of about 13.6 kmpl in our tests. Note that this was the combined figure of both highway and city testing.
How safe is the Toyota GR86?
Due to impending changes in European safety regulations, the GR86 will only be available in Europe until mid-2024. The financial feasibility of upgrading the vehicle to comply with new standards, such as road sign detection cameras and repositioned windscreens, doesn’t make sense for Toyota.
How many color options are there?
The Toyota GR86 is available in 7 color options as of now: Crystal Black Silica, Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Ignition Red, Magnetite Gray Metallic, Oasis Blue and Sapphire Blue Pearl are the ones on sale, out of which we think the Ignition Red is the most attractive one.
Should you buy the Toyota GR86?
The GR86 stands out as an exceptional sports car. The transition from the GT86 to the GR86 has not only preserved the car’s entertaining nature but also enhanced its practicality and comfort. Long drives that were once exhausting in the GT86 are now more manageable thanks to the improved chassis stiffness and liquid-filled engine mounts, which contribute to better overall refinement.
The soon-to-be-phased-out 2024 Toyota GR86 offers a balanced mix of excitement and usability. It’s still an exhilarating drive, yet it's more accommodating for daily use, with enough power to navigate traffic smoothly without feeling excessive. Toyota has adeptly addressed previous shortcomings while retaining the essence of the 86, resulting in a well-rounded sports car.
What are my alternatives?
Rivals for the Toyota GR86 include the Ford Mustang, Nissan Z, Subaru BRZ, Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Toyota Supra.
